Stem Cell Related Patent Number US5411883

Title:Proliferated neuron progenitor cell product and process
Inventors:Boss, Barbara D.; Alameda, CA, USA
Spector, Dennis H.; Oakland, CA, USA
Summary:Described herein is a novel neural progenitor cell culture and its products. The invention relates to methods by which cells that are obtained from ventral mesencephalon tissue from a mammalian embryo are then isolated and proliferated in vitro to produce a culture which differentiates into dopamine-producing cells. Products of the invention include cultures containing neural progenitor cells, preferably grown as aggregates in suspension. Further disclosed are methods by which ventral mesencephalon tissue is obtained from a donor at appropriate stages of embryonic development, after which the tissue is dissociated to obtain single cells and small cell clusters for the culturing of the neural progenitor cells. Therapeutic applications to the regeneration of neural tissue are included.
