The invention relates to genetically engineered and isolated human mesenchymal stem cells that carry within them genes of interest encoding for the expression of physiologically or pharmacologically active proteins which can differentiate into more than one connective tissue type, such that the tissue is transfected with the exogenous genetic material encoding the protein to be expressed. Claims of the invention include the ability to introduce, in a targeted manner, additional copies of essential genes into cells in order to allow the expression in proliferating, nondifferentiating cells of these specific gene products which can then be utilized in hormone matrix proteins, cytokines, adhesion molecules and detoxification enzymes. Therapeutic applications are included for tissue repair and for the correction of genetic disorders by gene therapy. | Abstract: | Genetically engineered human stem cells that carry within them genes of interest particularly for the expression of physiologically or pharmacologically active proteins or for use in gene therapy. In addition to correction of genetic disorders, is the ability to introduce, in a targeted manner, additional copies of essential genes to allow expression in proliferating, nondifferentiating cells of certain gene products.
