Title:Method for repairing cartilage
Inventors:Naughton, Gail K.; Del Mar, CA, USA
Willoughby, Jane; Solana Beach, CA, USA
Summary:Described herein is an in vivo method of producing cartilage at the site of a cartilage defect. The invention relates to the use of a 3-dimensional scaffold structure in combination with periosteal or perichondrial tissue and a preparation of stromal cells. Further disclosed are methods of implanting in a patient, at the site of cartilage damage, the biocompatible, nonliving 3-dimensional framework structure in combination with periosteal or perichondrial tissue which serves to hold the scaffold in place and while providing a source of chondrocyte progenitor cells, chondrocytes and other stromal cells for attachment to the scaffold in vivo. Also described are properties of a preparation of cells that can include chondrocytes, chondrocyte progenitor cells or other stromal cells, and methods for the administration of such a preparation either before, during or after implantation. Claims of the invention include enhanced chondrogenesis and the migration of chondrocytes, progenitor cells and other stromal cells from the adjacent in vivo environment into the scaffold for the production of new cartilage at the site of implantation.
